Mummy the Peepshow: School Girl Pop
[Records of the Damned]

Mummy the Peepshow is girl pop ‘n roll from Osaka.  Cute, bouncy, and fun, School Girl Pop should be welcomed by anyone with a taste for J-pop with a light sanding of gritty guitar.  To me, it seems that MtP is not trying to be a pop band so much as having fun with the IDEA of being a pop band.  Song titles like “Hide-and-Seek on the Turntable” reflect the playful way in which they approach their audience.  This isn’t to say that all they have to offer is a gimmick.  “In a Hospital” contains a classic punk bass intro, which leads into a series of images from the inside of a medical ward.  The album never gets particularly crazy, nor does it really get boring.   They’re having too much fun with what they’re doing for things to go stale.  It’s carefree, energetic, innocent, and particularly well-blended.  If this sounds like your bag, it’s a fun one.
